A large British Rail Western Region railway wagon lamp, with twin bulls-eye lenses, red (brake wagon) filter and oil burner. Marked Vaporite Patent No 583 326, Sherwood LTD BHAM.
One of the largest manufacturers of new lighting devices was the English firm Sherwoods Ltd. in Birmingham, manufacturers of oil lamps and burners. In 1904 they were trading as Sherwood Isaac & Son Ltd., but by 1920 they had taken over Linley & Co. of 73-75 Great Lister Street, ‘American’ pattern lamps to become Sherwood-Linley. Nechells Park Works, Eliot Street, Nechells then moved to 44-50, Granville St.
Signs of a wear, but in a good working condition. Height (including handle) 46cm.
