One can fill the lamp with essential fragrance oil, when the light lights up, the oil is heated and spreads the wonderful scent of the oil in your home. In the past, these lamps were used to drive out smoke, hence the German name; Rauchverzehrer. They came in all kinds of forms such as animals, figures and vase models.
