Kalaga tapestry - Burma - ca. 1950

Luxuriously made Burmese Shwe chi doe or kalaga tapestry in wonderful earth hues. Old/antique kalaga with an appealing scenery of a galloping battle horse. The fine kalaga has a splendid deep relief along the entire image and in the flora and fauna. Even though Shwe chi doe literally means 'embroidered with gold thread', the tapestries with this name are made with various techniques such as embroidery, application (sequins) and quilting. Historic sources from the Chinese Tang dynasty and temple inscriptions from the old capital Bagan confirm that this technique has existed for over a thousand years. The origin of the Shwe chi doe probably lies in India. The often used name kalaga means 'Indian temple cloth' and the Indian technique of mirror embroidery (Shisha embroidery) reminds us of Shwe chi doe. Shwe chi doe is a unique style and much more multifaceted than Shisha embroidery. This large work is handmade. It still is in excellent condition but could be missing a small bead or sequin (but not noticeable or disturbing), or the frame could show a minor point of damage. The size including frame is approx. 58 cm x 56 cm. Weigh approx. 1 kg. Will be shipped well-packaged and with track and trace.
