The Mercedes 280 SE Coupé (W111) first appeared on the road along with the Convertible in 1967 and remained in production until 1971. Under the majestic bonnet was a six-cylinder in line engine with fuel injection that delivered 160 hp. The well-known car magazine Road & Track described the car as "one of the best-looking body designs to come from any German concern." “With its beautiful design and exceptional proportion, this series became an instant classic”. Not one word hereof was a lie! In terms of passive safety, the W111 was a true pioneer, for example, the sharp protruding parts in the interior were upholstered so that in case of an accident an injury would be avoided, the handles to open the door didn’t protrude anymore and it was the first car with a safety steering wheel to prevent the “spear” effect. Additionally, for the first time, a roll cage (safety cage) with integrated crumple zone was implemented, to a design by Béla Barényi. The last, and also the top model, was introduced to the market in August 1969, the 280SE 3.5 with a brand new 3,499 cc V8 engine with 200 hp and a top speed of 210 km/h and an acceleration of 0 to 100 in 9.5 seconds.
