Cadeira Savonarola (1) - Madeira, Couro - Início do século XIX

Maximum width: 68 cm Maximum height: 87 cm Maximum depth (including feet): 52 cm Dante chair. Also known as X-chair, it is based on the same mechanism as the Savonarola chair, but with only four intersecting slats, two at the front and two at the back, which are inserted into the armrests and into the two "sliding" feet. The seat and backrest are made of leather, thus providing a level of comfort that the all-wood Savonarola chair could not offer. It became very popular in the second half of the 16th century, especially in northern Italy. The term Savonarola comes from the name of Girolamo Savonarola (1452 - 1498), this type of chair dates back to his time and there is one still preserved in the Convent of San Marco in Florence, where he lived from 1482 till his death. Although not a typically liturgical piece of furniture, it is widely used in churches as a seat for priests or bishops.
