Apollonia was reportedly captured in the year 249 during the Christian persecution at the time of the Roman soldier emperor Decius, because she did not renounce her faith. She was tortured terribly. Bishop Dionysius claimed that all her teeth were pulled and her jawbone was shattered. After this, she would be burned alive, but when her guards didn't pay attention, she jumped into the fire herself. Her worship spread rapidly through the Middle East and since the 16th century also to Western Europe. Her feast day is February 9.
