Volkswagen - K70 - 1971

Volkswagen/NSU K70. This is a Belgian car, imported in March 2022 for restoration in Romania where the body was professionally restored by a specialist working for the famous Tiriac Classic Car Collection. Only new parts / sheet metal was used. Pictures of the restoration available upon request. FIVA certificate- atested on 31/10/2022, historic vehicle, Retromobil Club Romania, MOT for 2 years until 11.11.2024, tax 0, low insurance - approved, paid and valid! The Fiva certification in Romania involves a very thorough inspection to nake sure all parts are historically cotrect. No modifications are allowed. LPG gas conversions are forbidden. A rare car with an impressive history. Developed by NSU, those who produced the first rotary piston engine on the RO 080 and are known for numerous innovations both in motorcycles (speed record between 1951-1956) and in cars. The innovations brought them numerous awards and fame, but they bankrupted them and so it was marketed as the VW K70 (the first water-cooled VW with front-wheel drive and engine), after VW bought NSU in 1970 and eventually merged with DKW to form Audi. This is the original model, with small modifications by VW. Engine 1.6, 75 HP - a legendary engine in good condition - at 57,000 km. Has been standing in a hall for 6 years, but it now has fresh Castrol GTX oil, new Continental tires, new NGK BR 6 ES spark plugs, new NGK leads, new coolant (post draining and cleaning the system with Liqui Moly system cleaner) and a new Varta battery, refurbished ignition lock, and tune-up. Nonetheless, the car has only been driven in the city, on Sundays and to classic car parades. Only 340 km were covered in the city since restoaration, on hot days without any problems. Of course, a thorough check is recommended before long distance trips. The enormous trunk, on two levels, also makes it one of the most suitable classics for conversion to electric/hybrid with electric drivetrain on the rear. This car is unique in the way it was preserved and its story. It belonged to De Cleen Roger, who was an NSU dealer in Belgium and remained active until 2016 when he fell ill with Alzheimer's. He continued to keep new parts (new old stock) including bodies and engines, which were all put up for sale by his family in 2022 (seller has pictures of the dealership and the stock). This was his car, bought from the widow of a friend who had bought it new in his dealership. There are many rare elements on this car... such as the headrests, auxiliary electric fans (It has an additional automatic, electric cooling fan and a spare manual one that seem custom made for this car (not visible). Or the pristine NSU chrome bumpers. It is clear that it was the car of a passionate mechanic. There were small areas with rust, which were professionally repaired by a tinsmith who deals with Tiriac Collection (photos available) and then it was completely painted (minus the roof) and professionally wax oiled in all cavities. The seats, which are very rare with these headrests, are original. The fog lights are equally rare and original with brand new bulbs, Two keys....nos NSU headlights with halogen bulbs and dedicated relays. The seller has many stories from his family. He bought many new pieces from them for another project, when he also saw this dusty car in a picture and they initially told him that they keep it, after which they told him that they agreed to sell it. The seller has a video of the hall with parts where it was: https://youtube.com/shorts/pFq8fNGwWjE?feature=share. The car also comes with some spare parts (radiator, clutch). All electrics work flawlessly - defrosting, fog lights, vents, heating, everything! The right hand signal, does not stay on at times, unless you hold it with your finger and the rear brakes got partially stuck a couple of times- so now I don't leave the service brake on when parking for a long time, but they should be checked anyhow. The car can be driven and it brakes well for a car of this age, but it could be better and the rear brakes should be serviced. It also needs a replacement air filter, since the one on it is quite old and I was not able to get a hold of a new one yet. There were no adjustments done to the engine or carburettor, but it starts right away every time and it idles perfectly, so there was no need. Please note that the seller will not be available between the 3rd and the 13th of November while overseas. It is recommended to view and inspect the vehicle prior to placing a bid in order to avoid any disappointment afterwards. Please contact Catawiki to arrange a viewing appointment.
