Egg And Spinach Susancai Garlic-head Vase, Early Kangxi (1662-1721) "YU TANG JIA QI" Hall Mark
A delicately and finely potted garlic-head bottle vase, Suantouping, of compressed form. The "Egg and Spinach" or Tiger-skin susancai enamel (green, yellow and aubergine) glaze is a kangxi invention, and numerous bowls, dishes and smaller items like censers and figures are published. The vases is scarer in numbers, and is a rare find. As seen on this example the piece is first fired with a clear glaze and the second firing with the enamels and a thin layer of clear glaze at a lower temperature. The vase bearing the mark "Yu Tang Jia Qi" (Beatiful vessel made for the hall of jade) inside double circles. A very rare mark found on these pieces, as the majority is marked with a crudely written shop-mark.
