Rare medieval sculpture of the risen Christ. Gothic - Escultura - 92 cm - Carvalho
Rare medieval sculpture of the risen Christ. Gothic. Oak with the original polychromy. Last quarter 15th century. Christ bears the signs of the crucifixion in his hand and in his chest, with his right hand he makes a blessing gesture, the two top fingers symbolise the Father & the Son, Heaven & Earth, the three lower fingers The Holy Trinity. Christ is wearing a garnment in the shape of a cope. The garnment is hold together with a clasp with floral motives. The folds in his garnment are V-shaped which is typical for the Gothic style.
A very special and rare feature of this statue is an iron ring on top of the head of Christ and another iron ring with part of a chain in his back. These rings and chain where used to hail up the sculpture through the vaults of a medieval church. This was done to reanact the ascention of Christ.
The practise of reacting the asscention was common in the middelages in the Holy Roman Empire, only very few of such statues survived. Very rare and a witness of a late medieval lithurgical practise.
The statue was made in Central Germany (Rhenisch). It can be dated around the last quarter of the 15th century (1475-1500).
The polychromy of the statue shows traces of wear, but is largely the original polychromy.
The left hand is missing, the base and right foot have some damage due to ageing, there are traces of woodworm (not active).
Dimensions: 92 (incl. ring on top of the head) x 29 x 25 cm.
