Mercedes-Benz - 230 SL - 1966

**This lot benefits from a reduced buyer's protection fee of 4.5% (instead of 9%) which will be arranged for the winning bidder after the closing of the auction.** This 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda is a well-presented example of the 1960s roadster, which was treated to a thorough restoration which was completed in 2018. Under the bonnet sits a 2.3-litre inline-six, producing around 148bhp and sending it to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. This left-hand-drive 230 SL was first registered with the DVLA in August 2018, and is offered for sale by its fourth UK-based owner, who acquired the car in July 2023. The odometer shows 66,799 kilometres, however this is not warranted. The car has had a recent spend in excess of £12,000 at marque specialist Colin Ferns. This sophisticated 230 SL is now finished in a blue metallic hue with a matching ‘Pagoda’ hardtop and a blue convertible roof, over an attractive cream leather-trimmed cabin, offset by blue carpet and wood trim. It rides on 14-inch steel wheels with chromed trims and body-coloured hub caps, shod with Michelin tyres. The specification includes chrome bumpers, two exterior mirrors, a front-wing mounted aerial, VDO dials, heating and ventilation, and a more modern Classic Car Stereo single DIN head unit with auxiliary, USB and Bluetooth smartphone connectivity. The seller notes that the car has been fitted with electronic ignition. Accompanying the car is a history file with images and invoices from the car’s earlier restoration, a selection of maintenance invoices, and its hard-top ‘Pagoda’ roof. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. Specific notes from the seller include: on the exterior there is a small dent on the bonnet, but overall the whole car is in superb condition. The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 17 July 2018 at an indicated 63,231 km, resulting in a first-time pass with no advisories. It is now understood to be exempt from mandatory MOT testing due to its age. Service History: This 230 SL’s most recent maintenance was carried out during August 2023 at an indicated 66,000 km by Classic Connection. The work comprised of an engine oil and filter change service. Prior to this, the car was serviced in 2019-20 by Mercedes-Benz specialist Colin Ferns which was a significant amount of work to the car totalling in around £12,000. Prior to this it was restored, including an engine rebuild which was completed in 2018, and restoration of the car’s brightwork alone is noted to have cost in excess of £20,000. Summary: This 230 SL handsome example of Mercedes-Benz’s characterful classic roadster, which noted to be in superb condition having benefitted from a comprehensive prior restoration. Having also been treated to a significant recent maintenance spend of £12,000 with renowned Surrey-based Mercedes-Benz specialist Colin Ferns, this car is now ready to be driven. Accompanied by its colour-coded ‘Pagoda’ hardtop, it would make a wonderful addition to any enthusiast’s collection, and a fine weekend cruiser which would also be a welcome visitor to any classic car show.
