A superb find of a previously undocumented/unknown Torii Kotondo kuchi-e (口絵)
Title in colophon reads: 口絵 [下地化] ......鳥居 言人 Kuchi-e [Shitaji-ka] Torii Kotondo
Unfortunately the print is not a woodblock, but a lithography. Nonetheless, a fantastic addition to any Kotondo collector!
The kuchi-e is not currently documented in any catalogue/library or database either in Western world or in Japan.
From 1918 until around 1926 Kotondo studied under the supervision of the great Kiyokata Kaburagi, actively contributing to a few magazines that were en vogue. This is the earliest known Kotondo kuchi-e, 1921, also a magnific design, a woman changing make-up foundation
