Unlike his predecessors who shot the Pirelli calendar, photographer Steve McCurry had never worked in the world of fashion or advertising. Nor had he ever photographed scantily clad models. Known as a photojournalist or war photographer, McCurry prefers to describe himself as a street photographer who likes to capture the situations he encounters. As he himself explains: "The most interesting way to work is to walk down the street and capture life as it happens, purely by chance". For the 2013 calendar, McCurry has adapted this approach, incorporating elements of real life and spontaneity into the usually highly orchestrated making of The Cal. Though McCurry used many models in the calendar, in keeping with his traditional style of fashion, elegance and sensuality, he celebrated these women for more than just their beauty. "First of all, the models are dressed, and each of them is socially engaged," McCurry explains. "They are practical and realistic people." Isabeli Fontana, for example, was the Brazilian ambassador for 1love, an organisation that helps disadvantaged children. Petra Nemcova founded the Happy Hearts Fund after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which she survived, to help children affected by natural disasters. Other models featured in the calendar include Karlie Kloss, Adriana Lima, Liya Kebede
