It is only made in exceptional harvests. This wine is designed to last, and improve, over time. The best CVNE vineyards in Rioja Alta are destined for the production of Imperial Gran Reserva. The Barbarroja and Antoñanzas farms, 40 years old and with small production located in Torremontalvo, were selected for this harvest. Dry vineyards, small in area, formed in a glass, clay soils with areas of pebbles, exposed to the South and poor in organic matter, gentle slopes and moderate continental climate. It remains for 12 months in tanks to finish the malolactic fermentation and rest before being aged in wood. The wine matures for 36 months in semi-new 225-liter barrels, 70% American oak and 30% French. Bottled in the spring of 1981. Depending on the vintage, it is left to rest for between 36 and 60 months in the winery's cellars before being marketed in the mid-1980s.
