Robert Doisneau - Simca Poissy - 1959
This extremely rare and important company photobook is a celebration of the new Simca car factory located in Poissy, in the outer suburbs of Paris. The second largest French car maker in the 1950s and 60s (later taken over by Chrysler), their Poissy facility was designed to make their new Simca 1100 engine for use in it's range of cars.
Using innovative graphic design and images by Robert Doisneau and other photographers, who was well known for his work in the French car industry, this photobook follows the constructon of the new Simca factory before focussing on the manufacturing journey as well as all the social services provided to the workers. Combining pictorial statistics, flow charts, maps, fold-out sections, bold graphic design and striking photographs, this book was produced and designed by the innovative and prestigious Imprimerie Draeger Frères which has published some of the masterpieces of French publishing and was one of the pioneers of advertising printing.
Unlike his other publications for the French motor industry, Doisneau concentrates on the manufacturing process rather than the finished cars turning this book into a celebration of the Simca company rather than a publication designed to appeal to ordinary consumers.
Robert Doisneau is best known for his 1949 book La Banlieue de Paris included by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger in The Photobook Vol.1 pages 187/201, Andrew Roth, Book of 101 Books, page 132 and 802 photo books from the M. + M. Auer collection, page 336.
