Born on July 18, 1893, in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, he was known by his real name, Tokushige Hara. He pursued his education at Utsunomiya Commercial School and relocated to Tokyo at 18 years old. Under the tutelage of Tamahide III (Chagoro Sawaguri), Tamahide II (Motojiro Sawaguri), and Ginjiro Miura, he honed his skills in doll craftsmanship. Establishing independence under the name Yonezu in 1922, he mastered various techniques such as Gosho, Kimekomi, Musha, Oyama, and Mitsuori. Specializing in crafting doll heads primarily through wood carving, he employed diverse materials like paulownia wood and paper. His exceptional craftsmanship earned him the distinction of being the first doll maker designated as a national intangible cultural asset in 1966. His talent was recognized internationally when he exhibited at the Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibition in Paris and Nice in 1948 and participated in overseas showcases such as the Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibition in Australia in 1956.
