The offered item is a captivating Shunga book titled "Shakka Hachou Yamato Bunko Insuitei Bokou," published in the inaugural year of Ansei (1854). This masterpiece merges the art of Ukiyo-e with the narrative depth of a sensual novel, presented through woodblock printing. Tanekiyo's journey from a young monk in Asakusa's Nichirinji Temple to a celebrated storyteller under the tutelage of Kawatake Mokuami and then adopting the vibrant world of Shunga under the pseudonym Insuitei is as intriguing as the tales he penned. Having faced expulsion from the temple, his transition into the literary world, especially the creation of Shunga, marks a significant period in Japanese art and literature, reflecting the socio-cultural dynamics of his time. Despite the passage of time, which has led to some wear, stains, and fading, this piece retains its historical and cultural significance, offering a window into the intimate aspects of Edo period society (please refer to the photographs for condition details).
