Lanterna - Granito

Impressive, 6-part circular shaped carved granite pedestal garden lantern. From the bottom until the top: - The kidan 基壇 (subsurface) and kiso (platform) form one part together. - Followed by a circular sao 竿 (pillar), cylindrical of shape, represents chi, the earth 地. - Carrying a chûdai 中台 ('central platform'), represents sui 水 (water) - The next part is known as hibukuro 火袋 (fire box) encases the lantern's light or flame, and thus represents ka 火 (fire). It is round of shape and with 4 open panels to be able to place a light source (ensô), one with a ‘lattice’-work window, one with an opening in the shape of the moon and one with an opening representing the sun. - Followed by roof, also circular of shape, this part is represents fû (air), as it is top-most near the sky. This part has a crack in the granite, please check picture nr 14. This crack is not affecting the atmosphere or strength of the lantern. - Crowned by the last part named hôju 宝珠, shaped like the bud of a lotus flower. It is also known as the ‘wish-fulfilling jewel’ and in the lantern it represents kû 空 (void or spirit). Approx. dimensions: Height 121 cm, Width 48 cm, and Depth 48 cm. The age of these lanterns is difficult to determine. We think that this one is from the 20th century, a period known as the Shôwa period (1926-1989). It has a soft appealing outdoorsy patina by being placed outside for several years. It is in a very good original condition apart from a crack on top of the kasa. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. Shipping of this stone lantern is relatively easy. We will use two wooden pallets and good packing for safe transport. When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity.
