The area of production at 48-9 & 10 Neo Matsuda Aza Hatsushikadani, Motosu City, Gifu Prefecture (around the Neo Valley fault), has been designated as a Natural Monument of Japan in 1941 and as a Special Natural Monument in 1952. Due to strict regulations, the extraction of such stones from this locality has been prohibited since then, which makes this particular specimen, retrieved before the prohibition, exceedingly rare and valuable.
