Alan was inspired to start this series of paintings when He became aware of the bizarre patterns that appear and instantly disappear instantly on the surface of relatively calm water. They are caused by the interplay of light, shade, wind and nearby objects ( boats, rocks, harbour walls etc.) to name but a few. The state of the tide is also relevant. Choppy water reminiscent of globs of green glass can change into silvery liquid metal when the tide turns. He takes great delight in seeking out new material on his travels in the U.K., the Far East and the U.S. He prefers painting on a hard surface, rather than canvas, and usually makes the wood panels himself to his own specifications. Three coats of acrylic gesso are applied before the oil painting commences.
