Hispania, Osca.. Domitius Calvinus. Denarius
Rare and very scarce Osca denarius. Domitivs Calvinvs (Huesca). Denarius. (FAB. 1923) (ACIP. 1427)
Bearded male head on the right, behind OSCA. Simpulum, aspergillum, axe and apex, below DOM. COS. ITER. IMP RRC 532/1. C.18-17 7. Craw 532.1. B.I-457. 3 81g. Axis 2h
Simpulum (small cup), aspergillum (instrument for sprinkling or sprinkling), apex (flame cap used by the priests of Jupiter)... And finally the axe, whose first use was sacred or ritual (as an instrument of sacrifice it was known as securis) and then secular, used as a badge by the lictors, who carried the ax within their fasces, a symbol of the power to administer justice. The mixture, in the same piece, of mixed types is significant, indigenous on the one hand, where the inspiration in the Bolskan and Roman pieces can be clearly seen, with the legend of the mint in Latin Osca, on the other.
From a historical point of view, this coin was minted under the consulate of Domitivs Calvinvs who had just put down the revolt of the Cerretans, a people from the Eastern Pyrenees and who had the support of Sextus Pompey.
