The ring is inscribed with VOT, whereby the O is raised in a circular raised bezel (resembling the Evil Eye). Angled shoulders, plain ring band. The inscription of VOT is short for VOTVM (vow) and is a vow or promise, a wish for well-being, prayer and hope. Outside diameter: ± 22 mm Inside diameter: ± 14,5 x 15,5 mm Weight: ± 2,31 g Condition: good solid condition and wearable. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images. HISTORY The belief in the 'Evil Eye' dates back about 5.000 years and is present in many ancient cultures around the Mediterranean area. They are used as an amulet or talisman to ward off the evil eye. The staring eyes are supposed to reflect the malicious gaze back to the sorcerer. In Celtic mythology it was a popular design and in many Celtic sites across Europe 'Evil Eye' beads have been discovered. Evil eye beads were popularised with the Phoenicians, Persians, Greeks, Romans and Ottomans.
