He was encouraged by his brother, the renowned illustrator Sanjulian, to pursue a career in illustration, which he began in 1979, and has since worked for several international publishers such as Dell Publishing, Bantam, Dove, Fontana, and Mondadori. Maren’s illustration work won him the award for best illustration of fantasy and science fiction in the early 1990s. In addition to his illustration work, Maren is also well-regarded for his portrait paintings, including a commission to paint the main cast of the re-release of the “Star Wars” movies in 1996.
