Betelbox - Indonésia (Sem preço de reserva)

Traditional Sirih (betel)box made of brass with lid, with openwork leaf and curlicue motifs. This betel box is also in the collection of the Tropical (Tropen)Museum in Amsterdam. Dated: 1910-1920; Indonesia. Provenance: private collection. Betel containers or Sirihboxes were considered paraphernalia. During the engagement and marriage ceremony, the Sirih-Pinang tradition was practiced regardless of religion or ethnicity. Because Sirih and Pinang belong together, it is a symbol of connection and inseparability. This custom represents the inseparable bond between husband and wife during the wedding ceremony. A Sirihbox (betel container) is used in the Sirih-Pinang ceremony. By accepting a Sirihbox, parents agree that their daughter will become the donor's bride. The Sirihbox contains small compartments for the ingredients of the betel bite, a tray or bowl for the Sirih leaves. The small containers for lime, betel nut, gambir or other ingredients are stored together in this Sirihbox. No scratches, cracks or dents. In a great vintage condition. Please see the photos for an accurate impression of this lot.
