Pac-Man turns forty. When he arrived on the rudimentary consoles of the early 1980s, there was nothing like it around. Other video games of the time were all about shooting monsters, capturing spaceships, and destroying predatory aliens. They were called Space Invaders, Asteroids and Galaxians. While he almost looked like a miniature cartoon. And he had everything to make it big. There was the protagonist, a rather bulimic yellow ball; there was food to devour non-stop and there were also Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde, four little ghosts with big sad eyes. From the day he landed on the market, May 22, 1980, nothing has been the same. Because Pac-Man is not just a game, but much more. It is a direct and biting metaphor of contemporary capitalism. It is the most incisive allegory of our daily life, always lived in a hurry. Always constantly looking for something to conquer. To infinite. Just like the video game, which originally should have had infinite levels, but instead will only have two hundred and fifty-six due to a bug. In short, Karl Marx could not have asked for anything better. Yet the genesis of the game is curious and mixes myth with reality, as befits events that change history. In the mind of its creator, the Japanese Tohru Iwatami, a programmer for Namco, it was supposed to be a simple pastime. The designer had worked in the company since 1977 and he much preferred pinball machines to video games. The inspiration, at least so the legend goes, seems to have come to him one evening in a pizzeria. After cutting the first slice of the Margherita, he would have noticed that the shape that remained on his plate resembled that of a circle with an open mouth. Hence the idea of working on the project, which in a few years will transform into the most famous video game ever. A video game created above all to appeal to the female audience. “All computer games of the time were violent,” Iwatani said in 1986. “There was nothing anyone could enjoy, especially women. I wanted to invent something that worked specifically for them."
