Medieval Ouro Anel de Sinete com Carruagem

A Medieval Germanic gold ring composed of a flat-section hoop and circular bezel bearing the stylised image of a horse-drawn chariot and driver. The image is surrounded by an engraved herringbone frame. Some black oxidisation as consistent with its age. Gold and silver rings were the most popular piece of jewellery to be worn in Medieval times by both men and women. Not only were they a way to display wealth and social status but they were also used as tokens of love and to ward-off misfortune. The rings were placed on all fingers and at different joints on the hands. This Germanic reproduction falls into a tradition of 'imitatio barbarica', which imitated the Roman iconography of emperors or divinities. This practice characterised Nordic gold production in the Dark Ages. Measurement: Internal diameter circa 1.6cm. Closest UK ring size: J. Weight: 3.83g Provenance: From the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s.
