The evergreen nature of the pine, which retains its color throughout the year, has led it to be known as ""Tokiwagi,"" and the color of pine leaves is referred to as ""Tokiwairo."" This use of pine in designs dates back to the Heian period, and with the diversification of designs in garments and other items during the Edo period, a variety of pine motifs that have been passed down to the present day were born.
