Vicus Phytomorphic pottery hanging vessel
Rare and significant, the Vicus Phytomorphic Hanging Vessel presents a remarkable depiction of a stylized vegetable, likely representing the Yacón root, renowned for its sweet taste and high sugar content. Also known as the Peruvian ground apple, Yacón bears resemblance to the French "pomme de terre" (ground apple), possibly due to its tuberous nature. In Vicus culture, vessels like this, adorned with phytomorphic designs, might have held symbolic importance, possibly serving as offerings in burials or commemorations.
Originating from the Vicus civilization, flourishing from 1000 BC to 600 AD in the northern Pacific coastal region of Peru, this vessel reflects the culture's expertise in ceramics, copper, and gold craftsmanship. Influenced by neighboring cultures like Salinar and Gallizano, as well as Ecuadorian traditions, Vicus ceramics stand out for their organic forms and meticulous detailing.
This particular vessel boasts a rounded, bulbous shape with a burnished surface adorned by cream and white stripes. Its gently tapered spout, topped with a circular suspension loop, adds to its elegance. Despite showing age-related wear, including a crack, repairs at the spout, and minor imperfections, this piece remains in excellent condition, measuring approximately 18.0cm x 18.0cm x 14.0cm.
