Maarten Van Severen studied architecture in Ghent. He began by working in various decoration and furniture workshops before creating his own furniture in 1986. His son is the architect David Van Severen. His first creation was a steel table with a very simple design which would later be made of aluminium. In 1988, he created a wooden table, narrow and long. Based in Ghent, he designs and makes his furniture in his workshop. He only began working with furniture manufacturers such as Vitra, Kartell, Edra and Bulo in the late 1990s. He collaborated with OMA, Rem Koolhaas' architectural firm, from 1997 to 1999. As part of this, he participated in the interior design of the Villa dall'Ava in Saint-Cloud and then the Villa Floirac near Bordeaux. Today he is known for his simple and minimalist creations: the LCP chair is part of the MoMA1 collections.
