A Mama (Kantana) Bushcow mask, Nigeria, région Plateau State, collected in Lafia, red wood; signs of ritual use and age. Incl stand.

The Mama (or Kantana) bushcow mask, originating from the Mama people of central Nigeria, is a powerful ritual object used primarily in masquerade performances related to agricultural cycles, initiation, and community protection. The Mama, also known as Kantana in some ethnographic sources, are a small group situated in the Benue River region. Their mask traditions share affinities with those of neighboring ethnic groups such as the Jukun and Chamba, but they exhibit distinct visual and performative characteristics that reflect specific cosmological and social beliefs.
The bushcow mask is a zoomorphic helmet mask, typically carved from a single block of wood and representing an abstracted animal—often interpreted as a hybrid of buffalo, antelope, or other powerful forest creatures. These masks are large, often bulky, and worn over the head and shoulders, completely concealing the wearer. The surface may be painted in bold patterns using red, white, black, or blue pigments, and sometimes adorned with natural materials such as raffia, fiber, or feathers. The defining visual feature is the large, curving horns that extend from the top of the mask, which can be symmetrical or asymmetrical depending on regional and workshop variation. The face of the mask tends to be minimal, with geometric eyes and snout-like projections, emphasizing its non-human, spirit identity.
The mask functions as a spirit being rather than a representation of a literal animal. It is danced during masquerades that occur at significant moments in the community calendar, including planting and harvest festivals, funerals, and rites of passage for young men. The bushcow, as a symbol, connotes strength, aggression, fertility, and the untamed force of nature. Its performance in masquerade serves to activate these energies on behalf of the community, bringing about spiritual protection, agricultural abundance, and social cohesion.
Masquerade performances involving the bushcow mask are typically accompanied by intense drumming, energetic movement, and elaborate choreography. The dancer, hidden beneath the costume and mask, enters a trance-like state and becomes a medium for the bush spirit. The performance can be intimidating or awe-inspiring, especially when the dancer charges at spectators or enacts symbolic confrontations with other masqueraders. In this way, the bushcow mask serves both to entertain and to enact serious ritual functions, including the mediation of social tensions and the affirmation of communal identity.
Although the bushcow mask is associated with masculinity and male initiation, its symbolic associations extend to fertility and the regenerative power of the earth. The horned animal form suggests both aggression and protection, a duality that reflects the complex relationship between humans and the natural world in Mama cosmology. The mask’s presence in public ritual marks the temporary intrusion of the spirit world into human affairs, a moment that must be carefully controlled and ritually concluded.
The term "bushcow" is a colonial-era English expression used by early ethnographers and collectors to describe these types of horned animal masks found throughout the Benue River valley. In local practice, the name of the mask or the spirit it embodies is often secret or known only to initiates. Consequently, catalogues and museum records frequently rely on generalized labels that obscure the specific cultural meanings and uses of the object.
Examples of Mama bushcow masks have entered Western collections primarily through ethnographic expeditions and the art market in the mid-20th century. While visually striking, their interpretation requires caution, as the symbolic and ritual dimensions of the mask are often deeply embedded in local knowledge systems, oral traditions, and performance contexts that are not fully captured in static display.
