Description

A large and exceptional Qajar Āyeneh-Dān (Wedding Mirror) dating to the Qajar Period (19th century), crafted from lacquered wood and richly decorated with exceptionally fine Khatam marquetry.

The rectangular frame is adorned with intricate geometric Khatam inlay composed of tiny pieces of wood, bone, and brass, demonstrating the remarkable craftsmanship of traditional Qajar artisans. Decorative calligraphic panels enrich the frame, while the reverse is also fully decorated with fine Khatam work, reflecting the high quality of execution throughout.

The exterior of the double doors is beautifully hand-painted with lively Qajar equestrian scenes, depicting mounted horsemen in traditional dress riding through stylised landscapes with elegant cypress trees and floral motifs—one of the most recognisable themes of Qajar lacquer painting.

Opening the doors reveals the original mirror together with exquisitely painted Gol-o-Morgh (Bird and Flower) compositions on the inner faces of the doors, creating a striking visual contrast between the dynamic hunting and riding scenes on the exterior and the refined floral decoration surrounding the mirror.

The arched upper section is also decorated with delicate floral motifs, completing the harmonious composition of this ceremonial mirror.

Measuring 57 × 40 cm, this is a substantial example, considerably larger than many surviving Qajar wedding mirrors encountered on today’s art market.
