This early-Meiji historical volume, 《明治太平記 初編 下巻》, is the second half of the first installment in the influential Meiji Taiheiki series. Printed during the early Meiji era, it continues the narrative of political conflict, military campaigns, and the rise of the new Meiji government as Japan transitioned from feudal rule into modernity.

Compiled by 村井静馬 (Murai Seima) and published by 延寿堂 (Enjudō), this volume is produced on traditional washi paper using classic Japanese stitched binding (和綴じ). As one of the earliest volumes of the series, it reflects the characteristic style of 19th-century Japanese printing, combining historical text with expressive line illustrations.

Historical Significance
The Meiji Taiheiki belongs to the genre of rekishi yomihon (historical reading novels). The 初編 (first series) covers the outbreak of conflict between Tokugawa loyalists and the forces supporting the imperial restoration. It provides essential context to understanding the collapse of the Tokugawa shogunate and the emergence of the Meiji Restoration, one of the most important turning points in Japanese history.

This 下巻 (Part 2) includes classical vertical Japanese text describing key battles, movements of opposing armies, and the actions of notable historical figures.
