This work is one plate from the illustrated series Les Âmes mortes (The Dead Souls) by the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol, comprising a total of 96 prints.
Marc Chagall created these etchings between 1923 and 1927, and the series was published in Paris in 1948 by Tériade.
This series is regarded as one of the major print portfolios in which Chagall depicted the spirit of his native Russia through his distinctive poetic and imaginative visual language.

Artist Profile

Marc Chagall was born in Russia in 1887 and died in 1985.
Although Jewish by origin, he later obtained French nationality.
He studied at Bakst’s art school and moved to Paris in 1910, where he began incorporating motifs from his homeland into his work.
He returned to Russia in 1914 and was involved in art administration after the revolution, before returning to Paris in 1922.
Retrospectives were held at the Kunstmuseum Basel in 1933, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946, and at the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris in 1947.
During the Second World War he stayed in the United States, and returned to France in 1947.
Further retrospectives were held at the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1950, in Tokyo and Kyoto in 1963, and in Zürich and Cologne in 1967.
He worked not only in oil painting but also in illustration, printmaking, and stained glass.
He is recognized as one of the representative painters of the twentieth century.
The Marc Chagall Museum is located in Nice.
