A magnificent Kuro-Raku (Black Raku) tea bowl displaying exceptional beauty with stunning silvery-metallic Yohen (kiln transformation) effects across its surface. This handcrafted Chawan bears the prestigious "Raku" seal, indicating its origin from the Raku pottery tradition.
Raku ware represents the pinnacle of Japanese tea ceremony ceramics. It was first created in the late 16th century by Chojiro under the guidance of tea master Sen no Rikyu, embodying the essence of Wabi-cha philosophy. The tea world has long held the saying "Ichi Raku, Ni Hagi, San Karatsu" (First Raku, Second Hagi, Third Karatsu), placing Raku ware at the highest position among tea bowls.
This particular bowl showcases remarkable characteristics of traditional Kuro-Raku craftsmanship. The deep black glaze has developed beautiful silvery iridescent patches through the dramatic firing and rapid cooling process unique to Raku pottery. The bowl was formed using the traditional "Tezukune" (hand-building) technique without a potter's wheel, then shaped with bamboo spatulas, resulting in an organic, slightly irregular form that fits naturally in the hands during the tea ceremony.
The bowl features the "Raku" seal impressed both inside the foot ring and within the bowl interior, confirming its place within the Raku pottery lineage.
