antique Ko-Hagi Flat Tea Bowl (Hirachawan), Signed
– Suitable for Omotesenke & Urasenke
Description:
An antique Ko-Hagi (old Hagi ware) flat tea bowl dating from an earlier period. The potter’s seal on the base has become faint due to kiln firing and age, making it difficult to decipher; however, it is presumed to be an exceptional work by a noted studio potter.
The refined and elegant hirachawan (flat tea bowl) form conveys a cool and refreshing presence, particularly suited for spring and summer tea gatherings. The condition is excellent, with no chips or cracks. As a fully handmade work, it is entirely unique, embodying the individuality and subtle irregularities valued in traditional Japanese ceramics.
This piece displays the characteristic qualities of Ko-Hagi ware:
Soft, creamy white clay
Thin, delicately applied glaze
Subtle translucency of the clay body
Natural kiln marks formed during firing
These elements express the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi—the appreciation of simplicity, imperfection, and the quiet beauty of age. The texture and natural firing traces make this bowl especially suitable for use in both the Omotesenke and Urasenke schools of the tea ceremony.
Beyond its role as a matcha tea bowl, it also serves as a refined decorative object, elevating modern interiors and complementing contemporary art spaces.

About Hagi Ware:
Hagi ware originated over 400 years ago in the former Chōshū domain (present-day Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture). Deeply connected to the culture of chanoyu (the Japanese tea ceremony), it has long been regarded as an essential ceramic of wabi-cha, the tea aesthetic associated with samurai culture.
Its soft clay surface and restrained elegance embody the quiet, understated beauty of the samurai tradition. The natural variations created through handcrafting harmonize effortlessly with modern European interiors and contemporary art collections, offering both historical depth and timeless design value.
Message:
This is a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic work of traditional Japanese craftsmanship with clear provenance. With use, the surface will gradually develop greater depth and a natural sheen over time.
Notice:
Before first use, soak in clean water to reduce absorption of impurities. As unglazed ceramic is porous, prolonged soaking may cause stains, odors, or mold. After use, wash promptly with mild detergent and dry thoroughly before storage.
Important Notice:
Shipping will be carefully arranged via Japan Post, DHL, or FedEx. Delivery typically takes about three weeks.
Import duties, taxes, and fees are not included in the item or shipping price.
Combined shipping is not available.
