Item Description
Up for sale is a rare and beautifully preserved antique cylinder sun dial, also known as a Shepherd’s Dial or Pillar Dial. This pocket-sized scientific instrument is crafted from 800 grade silver and features intricate engravings.
Details & Features:
Maker: Hallmarked "JHL" for Johann H. Lauer, a renowned silversmith from Nuremberg, Germany—a city historically famous for precision astronomical instruments.
Material: Solid silver, stamped with the "800" purity mark on the suspension loop.
Functionality: The top cap rotates smoothly to align the folding gnomon (arm) with the current month. The body is etched with vertical month columns (indicated by initials JFMAMJ / JASON D) and the corresponding Zodiac symbols.
Timekeeping: Features Roman numeral hour markings (V through X) and curved hour lines. When held vertically towards the sun, the shadow cast by the gnomon indicates the solar time.
