Origin and Purpose: Gigaku is a type of masked theater that was introduced from the continent during the Asuka period (around the 7th century) and was performed as entertainment at temple memorial services and other events.

Characteristics: Not only does it hide the performer's face, but it is also worn deep down to the back of the head, allowing the eyes, nose and mouth to see clearly, suggesting that gigaku was an outdoor performing art.
