"...Really good mature Chambertain.
Expensive tea, dried herbs, earth, spices.
Long and velvety and perfectly mature.
Soft, nice red fruit.
Good finesse and balance.
This is a great vintage..."
Producer: Founded in Mâcon in 1865, the Mommessin family is known for its roots in Beaujolais and Burgundy. The family achieved particular fame with the acquisition of the Grand Cru vineyard Clos de Tart in 1932.
This wine comes from the prestigious Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin on the Côte de Nuits.
Vintage 1988: This vintage is considered classic in Burgundy and age-worthy, often exhibiting a robust structure and pronounced tannins.
Characteristics: Typical notes of this mature wine include red berries, earthy tones, game, and licorice. Recent tasting notes often describe it as elegant with melting tannins, with the age of over 35 years bringing out distinct maturation aromas (tertiary notes).
Current Status
The Mommessin trading house was sold to the Boisset Group in 1997. The Mommessin family initially retained the renowned Clos de Tart estate, but sold it to François Pinault's Artemis Group in 2017/2018.
