铃木美基 Suzuki Miki
This tall Bizen ware vase by Suzuki Miki is a powerful expression of contemporary Bizen aesthetics rooted in the ancient tradition of Sue-ki stoneware. The cylindrical form, rising vertically with subtle tapering, evokes both strength and restraint — hallmarks of refined Bizen craftsmanship.
The surface reveals dramatic natural kiln effects, including deep firing gradients, ash deposits (goma), and rich iron-toned transitions. The vertical band of darker coloration flowing down the body is a natural result of flame path and kiln placement, giving the piece a dynamic and organic presence. The carved horizontal lines encircling the vessel add quiet structure and rhythm without disturbing the purity of the clay body.
The mouth is finished with two sculptural openings integrated into the rim, lending architectural balance and contemporary character. The base is signed by the artist.
Suzuki Miki’s philosophy — “tradition is innovation” — is embodied in this work. While firmly grounded in centuries-old Bizen firing techniques, the form and surface treatment express a forward-looking sensibility. His works are included in the public collection of the Worcester Art Museum (USA), and he has received numerous awards in major Japanese exhibitions.
An elegant and highly collectible contemporary Bizen vase suitable for both display and ikebana use.
