Vintage Bauhaus-Style Desk Lamp
Attributed to Kandem / Marianne Brandt Influence
Germany / Hungary, 1960s
A beautiful mid-century industrial desk lamp in the spirit of the Bauhaus movement, often attributed to designs associated with Marianne Brandt and the German manufacturer Kandem.
This model reflects the functional elegance that defined early 20th-century modernist lighting and remained influential through the 1950s–60s.
Design & Origins
The design language clearly references the Bauhaus school: pure geometry, industrial materials, and uncompromising functionality. Kandem, a German lighting manufacturer, collaborated with Bauhaus designers, including Marianne Brandt, to produce practical, mass-manufactured lamps with timeless appeal.
While the original concept stems from Germany (1920s–30s), this particular piece is identified as a Hungarian find from the 1960s, reflecting how Bauhaus-inspired industrial designs continued to circulate and be produced throughout Central Europe.
Similar variations were also produced by manufacturers such as SIS and Kaiser Idell, making exact attribution difficult without factory markings.
Features
Blue lacquered metal shade and base
Elegant curved chromed steel arm
Adjustable shade joint
Industrial toggle switch on base
Clean, functional silhouette
Tested and working
The curved neck gives the lamp a softer, more sculptural presence than earlier, rigid Bauhaus models, making it both practical and visually balanced.
Style & Aesthetic
Bauhaus / Functionalism
Mid-Century Industrial
German Modernism Influence
1960s Central European Design
The soft blue lacquer adds character and warmth, while maintaining the rational industrial identity typical of Bauhaus-inspired lighting.
Condition
Good vintage condition with signs of age consistent with use. Light surface wear to the lacquer and patina to the chrome arm, which adds authenticity and charm. Structurally solid and fully functional.
