Los Angeles was the focal point of Herb Ritts (1952-2002), who became internationally renowned for his distinctive nudes and images of models and celebrities. In the 1980s and 1990s he was commissioned by leading fashion designers such as Armani, Gianfranco Ferré, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Valentino and Versace, as well as magazines like GQ, Interview, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair, to lend glamour to products and layouts. Largely self-taught, Ritts developed his own style, often working with the light and landscape of California, setting his work apart from that of his New York colleagues. From the late 70s until his early death—2002, from AIDS-related complications—Ritts demonstrated not only extraordinary imagination and outstanding technical skill in images in which the boundary between art and commerce is dissolved; his work also stands as a paradigmatic example of the synergetic fusion of art, popular culture, and business in the wake of the Pop Art era of the 1960s and 70s.
