卖家的描述
Kutani Ware “Namban-de” Ash-Glazed Vase- Tōshō (陶庄)
This striking ceramic vase by Tōshō exemplifies the rare and expressive aesthetic of Namban-de style combined with natural ash effects — a type of surface rarely encountered in Kutani-related studio works. Unlike the brightly enameled image often associated with Kutani ware, this piece reveals a different lineage: one that values raw clay character, kiln transformation, and sculptural presence.
The rounded body rises organically into a narrow neck with an asymmetrical mouth, giving the vessel a dynamic silhouette reminiscent of natural rock formations. The surface is richly textured, bearing subtle ash deposits and firing marks that occurred spontaneously inside the kiln. These natural effects cannot be replicated artificially; they are the result of flame, mineral interaction, and temperature variation, making each piece completely unique.
Its coloration — a deep earthy brown with scattered grey and olive tones — reflects the traditional Namban aesthetic, historically inspired by early rustic ceramics introduced to Japan through foreign trade routes during the Momoyama period. The restrained palette and tactile surface evoke wabi-sabi ideals: beauty found in imperfection, weathering, and natural process.
The potter’s mark appears on the base, confirming authorship and emphasizing that this is not a mass-produced vessel but a hand-crafted studio work shaped individually on the wheel.
