This portrait oil painting is a work by Shuichi Kagawa (香川修一), a modern Japanese Western-style artist, created on 25 January 1966 (25th day of the 1st month, Shōwa 41, 昭和四十一年). The theme depicts the classic image of a Japanese Maiko (舞妓).

The main subject is a Maiko with a traditional high hairstyle adorned with hairpins and red-yellow floral ornaments. She wears a black patterned Kimono (着物), with the light-colored collar trim forming a clear visual focus. The figure has a gentle expression and a sideways gaze, accurately capturing the Maiko’s quiet and restrained charm. The pale green tones on the face and neck are the artist’s subjective color expression, enhancing the hazy aesthetic of the painting.

The work combines the color intensity of Western Expressionism with the aesthetic charm of traditional Japanese Bijin-ga (美人画). The dark green background sets off the Maiko’s makeup and costume, with bold and highly expressive coloring. This East-West fusion style was an important trend in Japanese Western-style oil painting in the mid-to-late 20th century, and Shuichi Kagawa demonstrates a distinct personal style in this piece.

The theme of “Maiko (舞妓)” is not depicted for sensational effect, but captures the gentle, restrained inner temperament of the Maiko through sketching (写生), reflecting the artist’s profound understanding of traditional Japanese performing arts and feminine beauty.

The work is housed in a multi-layered wooden outer frame with a gold inner lining. The artist’s hand signature is visible in the lower right corner of the painting.

The wooden support is marked: “Shōwa 41, 25 January, Miyoe, Sketch (昭和四十一年一月二十五日 美代栄 写生)”.
A red label on the left is handwritten: “Miyoe (美代栄)”.

These three inscriptions form a complete provenance record, confirming the work’s background and authenticity.

Due to age, the original frame shows minor rubbing, bumps and traces of use, and the oil painting has natural signs of aging. The overall condition is good.
