Item Description
加藤春鼎 Kato Shuntei (2nd Generation)
This elegant ceramic vase is a work by the second-generation 加藤春鼎 Kato Shuntei, a celebrated potter from Seto, Aichi Prefecture, following in the distinguished lineage of the Kato family — descendants of the legendary ceramic founder Kato Kagemasa (Toshiro). The piece is titled "Ko-Seto Ryogen"(古瀬戸了玄), meaning "Ancient Seto, Complete Darkness/Enlightenment," evoking the deep, meditative beauty of ancient Seto ceramics.
The vase takes a striking multi-faceted (dodecagonal) form, hand-shaped from the wheel, tapering gracefully from a wide base to a cylindrical neck with an open circular mouth. The surface is dramatically adorned with a rich, flowing glaze in warm terracotta oranges, deep iron browns, and streaks of charcoal black — a hallmark of the Ko-Seto (ancient Seto) tradition. The natural, unpredictable movement of the glaze cascades down the faceted body, creating a landscape-like visual depth reminiscent of fire, stone, and earth.
The base bears the artist's impressed seal mark, confirming authenticity. The piece comes with its original tomobako (accompanying wooden storage box) with the title and artist's name written in calligraphy on the lid. An accompanying provenance document (printed biography of the Kato Shuntei lineage) is also included.
This is a refined example of the living Seto ceramic tradition — powerful, expressive, and deeply rooted in Japan's oldest pottery heritage.

Artist Profile
加藤春鼎 Kato Shuntei (2nd Generation) — The name "Shuntei" (春鼎) has been passed down through generations of the Kato family, one of the most prestigious pottery lineages in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, tracing its ancestry to the legendary ceramic founder Kato Kagemasa (also known as Toshiro), who is credited with introducing glazed ceramics to Japan in the Kamakura period. The first-generation Shuntei (1885–) was a master ceramicist renowned for collecting ancient ceramics and reviving the techniques of Ko-Seto (ancient Seto ware). He was deeply influenced by the great tea master Masuda Donno, who visited his studio many times. The second-generation Shuntei continued this tradition, mastering the distinctive Seto glazing techniques including the dramatic flowing iron-brown and black ash glazes seen in this work. Active in major exhibitions including the Mainichi Newspaper-sponsored ceramics shows, the Shuntei kiln has earned broad recognition both nationally and internationally as a guardian of Seto's ancient ceramic heritage.
