Shunga is a traditional Japanese form of erotic art. It became highly popular during the Edo period, and almost every respected artist also created shunga. Usually, due to strict censorship from the Tokugawa shogunate, artist rarely signed their erotic works.
Senju is a Swedish artist who has been creating contemporary shunga for more than a decade. His work focuses on sensuality and intimacy. Shimotsuki
Senju – born, 1968 in Stockholm, Sweden.
Since early childhood, he showed a fondness for drawing. His grandfather was an artist trained in 1920s San Francisco, USA, and perhaps it was his early influence that kindled Senju’s passion for creating art. Senju’s parents were young and socialist. They moved around between various cities and, for a number of years, they lived in the countryside. Rural life became a defining moment in Senju’s life and provided a foundation for his outlook on life.
Senju now found himself deeply immersed in books on everything Japanese. He studied Japanese history, religion, art and culture with an intensity going far beyond everything he had done before.
He now decided to dedicate himself solely to Irezumi, the traditional Japanese tattoo.
He began travelling to Japan on a regular base, and during his journeys, he discovered photography and added this to his creative toolbox.
Senju has met Zen teachers, tattoo masters, Kendo masters, musicians, and artists in Japan. They have all contributed to making him feel that he belongs to Japanese culture. This sense of belonging has helped him evolve, both as an artist and human being.
Senju dedicate himself to painting also digital now and his career as an artist.
His Giclees, (higest Digital print form) are printed on 230gr. Hahnemuelhe Studio enhanced paper.
Condition:
Is as new. Never been framed.
The print will be send between hardboard and carton plates to prevent any damage in transport. Sending worldwide, insured with tracking post.
