Precolumbian Veracruz Standing Figure with TL test (c. 300-900 AD). 47.4 cm.

The figure represents a standing person, dressed in a wide mantle that covers the upper body and a sort of skirt down to the knees. Their face displays an intense expression with open eyes, black pupils, and an open mouth. The arms are extended with the palms of the hands open. The figure wears a headdress, possibly representing a ceremonial band or a symbol of rank. These sculptures had ceremonial, funerary, or votive purposes. The facial expression with the open mouth may be related to ritual chanting, communication with the gods, or the representation of life after death. The mantle and headdress may symbolize power and a spiritual connection with Mesoamerican deities.

The piece is made of ceramic and belongs to the sculptural tradition of the Gulf Coast of Mexico, specifically to the Classic Veracruz culture. Ceramic sculpture was one of the most characteristic expressions of Veracruz culture, with a strong presence of the so-called smiling faces, dancer figures, and representations of priests and rulers.
