Untitled (this is done), 2023
From the series Observer
82 × 82 cm
Mixed media on canvas
This 2023 work continues the visual and conceptual language of the Observer series, where the human figure becomes a site of transformation rather than representation. The portrait appears simultaneously formed and dissolving, as if identity is being negotiated in real time. Layers of fluid chromatic movement, warm ochres, burning oranges, flesh tones, and deep black fields converge into a single unstable presence.
The surface carries both painterly density and gestural interruption. Thick passages of paint compress into organic forms, while spontaneous white linear marks cut across the composition like fragments of language or thought. These interventions disrupt the portrait’s stability, suggesting a moment where instinct overtakes structure.
Within Observer, the human form is never static. It is processed through layers of memory, perception, and internal turbulence. The portrait does not attempt to define a subject; instead, it exposes a psychological condition suspended between emergence and collapse.
The phrase “this is done” functions less as a declaration of completion and more as a conceptual interruption, a gesture that questions authorship, intention, and the fragile boundary between creation and abandonment.
