Gordian III, Double-Denarius, Rome

A. : Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III facing right, seen from three-quarters behind.

R. : Apollo, half-naked, seated on the left, holding a laurel branch in his right hand, his left arm resting on his lyre placed on the seat.

Gordian III (225–244) was Roman emperor from 238 to 244, brought to power at a very young age during a period of great crisis. Under his reign, the Empire was largely governed by advisors, notably the Praetorian Prefect Timesitheus. He died during a campaign against the Sasanian Persians, in circumstances that remain unclear.

Gordien III (225–244) est empereur romain de 238 à 244, porté au pouvoir très jeune lors d’une période de grandes crises. Sous son règne, l’Empire est dirigé en grande partie par des conseils, notably le préfet du prétoire Timesithée. Il meurt lors d’une campagne contre les Perses sassanides, dans des circonstances restées incertaines.
