Harpocrates is the Greek name for the child form of Horus, known in Egypt as Horus the Child (Harpakhered). He emerged as an important figure particularly in the Late Period and later during the Hellenistic age. Harpocrates symbolizes youth, rebirth, and divine protection, and he was closely associated with his mother, Isis.
One of the most distinctive representations of Harpocrates in Egyptian art shows him seated on a blooming lotus flower. The lotus held profound symbolic meaning in ancient Egypt, representing creation, renewal, and the daily rebirth of the sun. According to mythological traditions, the young sun god was born from a lotus that rose from the primordial waters. By depicting Harpocrates seated upon the lotus, artists visually connected him to themes of cosmic regeneration and solar emergence.
In these images, the child god is often shown nude, with a sidelock of youth and his finger raised to his mouth, a gesture that originally symbolized childhood rather than silence.
