Title
Fine Aizu Lacquerware Stationery Box by Nuri-ichi – “Hatsune” (First Warbler) Design – Gold & Silver Maki-e – Mint Condition with Original Box
Description
This is an exceptional example of Aizu lacquerware (urushi), one of Japan’s most prestigious lacquer traditions, produced by the renowned workshop Nuri-ichi (Seki Lacquerware Store) in Fukushima Prefecture.
The design is titled “Hatsune” (First Warbler) and is inspired by the famous “Hatsune no Chōdo” (Hatsune Trousseau), a registered National Treasure of Japan. The original masterpiece was created for Chiyahime, the eldest daughter of the third Tokugawa shogun, as part of her wedding trousseau when she married into the Owari Tokugawa family. The motif is derived from the “Hatsune” chapter of The Tale of Genji and symbolizes parental affection and the refined elegance of the Heian court.
The box is beautifully decorated with gold and silver maki-e on a lustrous black lacquer surface. The composition depicts a classical landscape with a bridge, flowing water, pine trees, and plum blossoms—motifs associated with longevity, resilience, and prosperity. The fine linework and delicate use of metallic powders create remarkable depth and an elegant sense of luxury.
This piece functions as a bunko (document or stationery box), traditionally used to store important papers, letters, or small valuables. It is both a practical object and a refined decorative work that reflects the long tradition of Japanese lacquer craftsmanship.
