Item Description
香祥 Kosho — Kutani Ware Globular Flower Vase with Flying Cranes and Celadon Glaze, with Original Wooden Box
This exquisite globular flower vase (tsubo-gata kabin) is a work by 香祥 Kosho, a Kutani ware artist from Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. The vase presents a generous, perfectly rounded form in the classic Japanese style of ikebana floral arrangement vessels.
The surface is finished in a lustrous, layered celadon glaze — shifting softly from pale jade green to warm ivory and silvery-white across the swelling curves of the body. The delicate crackling of the glaze (kannyu) creates a subtle web of fine lines across the entire surface, adding depth and a distinctly refined character to the piece. This effect is a hallmark of skilled Kutani glazework and is highly prized by collectors.
Adorning the upper shoulder of the vase is a graceful depiction of soaring cranes — Japan's most revered symbol of longevity, good fortune, and elegance. The cranes are rendered in a restrained, tonal technique, their forms emerging seamlessly from the mist-like glaze layers. The composition elegantly wraps around the vase, lending a sense of motion and poetry to the form.
The interior is finished in deep matte black, providing a striking visual contrast with the celadon exterior. The base bears a hand-brushed blue underglaze artist's seal reading "香祥" (Kosho). This piece is brand new and unused. It comes with a fitted traditional wooden storage box (hakobuki), with the lid inscribed in ink with the title "花瓶" (Flower Vase) and the artist's name and seal — a mark of authenticity and collectible value. A dedicated lacquered wooden display stand is also included.
